Upgrading Marine Electrics Refitting an Open Runabout
In ongoing efforts to improve the quality of Blue Sea Systems’ products, company engineers conduct product research. Many of these research efforts involve upgrades to existing marine electrics on a variety of boats. Recently, Blue Sea Systems took on the refit of the electrical system in a Harborcraft open runabout. This is the first series of articles about marine electrics upgrades.
The runabout is owned by a local club and used by its members as a mark boat and support tender for weekly sailboat races. It is moored in a slip year round. It is powered by an 80 HP Honda outboard, and equipped with a shore charger. Shore power remains connected when the boat is in its slip.Over the next few months, look for a series of articles about this refit. In this issue, click the link below to read the first article in this series. Application Brief: Adding a Secondary Battery, Battery Switch, and Automatic Charging Relay (ACR) Future newsletter issues will contain articles on the following topics: • | Replacing the original switch/fuse branch panel with Blue Sea Systems’ WeatherDeckTM Waterproof Circuit Breaker panel | • | Replacing the metal 12 Volt DC outlet socket with Blue Sea Systems’ new waterproof socket | • | Using the Blue Sea Systems’ Mini Clamp Multimeter to diagnose and troubleshoot marine electrics |
Technical Brief - General technical information for improving safety, reliability, and usefulness of marine electrical systems Preventing Cycling in Battery Combiners, Voltage Sensitive Relays, and Automatic Charging Relays
In some applications, as soon as a battery combiner, voltage sensitive relay, or automatic charging relay (ACR) combines battery banks, it may immediately reopen because the load demand put on the charging source exceeds its output. There are solutions to this problem: connect the combiner to the larger battery bank, move the combiner connections closer to the charging source, or use an ACR that is programmed to prevent cycling.
